Shanghai American School is a private, non-profit co-educational international
school established originally in 1912 and then re-established in 1980.
The Shanghai American School operates under the umbrella of the American
Consulate in Shanghai. It is owned by the SAS Parent Association and
is governed by a Board of Directors elected from that group. The goal
of the Shanghai American School is to serve qualified students from
the expatriate population of Shanghai.
The language of instruction is English. The core curriculum is
supplemented by offerings in physical education, music, dance, drama,
English as a Second Language, computers, library, Chinese, French
and Spanish. Field trips throughout the greater Shanghai area are
supported and encouraged. Secondary students participate in Math
Counts, Model United Nations and a variety of other activities.
There is also an after-school activity program that includes athletics,
crafts, arts and academic pursuits.
Shanghai American School operates on two newly-completed, purpose-built
campuses. Facilities include libraries, science labs, cafeterias
and gymnasium as well as regular classrooms.
Shanghai American School year begins in the last week of August
and ends in mid-June. Local Chinese holidays as well as a winter
and spring break fall within the academic year.
